Board members and supporters on visitA group of EITI Board members and supporters visited a gold mine that Newmont operates in Ahafo in northern Ghana. They also met with the Ahafo District Assembly.

Board members and supporters on visitThis meeting provided an opportunity to debate revenue sharing and accountability with regional and local officials and with traditional Chiefs. Many Board members commented on what a privilege it was to see how initiatives like the EITI creates a framework for this discussion at a local level.

The visit took place on Thursday 21 February, the day before the EITI Board Meeting in Accra. At the Newmont site, the group saw the process from topsoil removal all the way to the gold extraction, and to meet some of the workers.

Newmont is one of 37 companies in the extractive industries that support the EITI. Information about Newmont's operations in Ghana is available on their Ghana website. (http://www.newmontghana.com)
